The Intoxicating Story of Baxter the Pomeranian

Dec. 8, 2009

Baxter was looking for a refreshing drink on a hot day, but the inquisitive Pomeranian got a taste of something he wasn’t expecting. Read Patricia Reinhold’s account below.

We live in Las Vegas and my husband had just finished mowing the lawn, when he went into the kitchen to get an ice cold beer. He had just taken a sip or two when the home phone rang. He set the beer on the patio table and went inside to answer it. When he returned five minutes later, our Pomeranian, Baxter had knocked over the beer and drank about a half of the can. He began stumbling around, so we rushed him to the vet's office. They had to flush his kidneys and put him on an IV. The next day, when I picked him up, he had such a bad hangover, he could hardly lift his head, but was all right. Our VPI pet insurance paid the majority of the bill, even when he had to return a couple of weeks later to have his kidneys rechecked.

Patricia, thanks for your story. While not the most common accident we hear about at VPI, our pets can essentially get “drunk” and even poisoned from alcohol, just like humans can. In fact, in 2008 VPI received 18 claims for alcohol toxicity. And those expenses add up; the average submitted claim fee was around $460.
